Dementia is a serious loss of general mental ability, mainly affecting memory. It can be static, as the result of a single general brain injury, or progressive, leading to a long-term decline in cognitive function caused by damage or illness within the body.

The most common early signs of dementia are:
a) changes in behavior, such as apathy, isolation, reduced activity, and self-neglect
b) memory impairment, especially difficulty remembering recent events

Your mother has begun to show the first symptoms of dementia. Following the recommendation of the doctor who was caring for her, you take her to this particular nursing home, rumored to be one of the finest in the area. After a few weeks, you receive a telegram from Warrenton informing you that your mother’s condition has worsened and that you must contact the nursing home’s front desk to arrange a visit. You call, and after a strange conversation with the woman in charge, you schedule your visit.
